Patient Initial Concerns

If you have any symptoms related to any form of head and neck cancer, you should contact your GP or Dentist for an appointment. If they have any concerns, then they will refer you to the hospital to be seen by one of our specialist consultants within two weeks of your referral.

Tests and Investigations

You will undergo tests so we can determine your diagnosis (please visit 'tests and investigations which may take place' for more information on what these tests may involve). We aim to carry out these tests at your initial appointment, however we may still need to carry out further checks at a later date. The tests will be carried out in SA国际传媒 Hospital, which is the local Cancer Diagnostic Centre.

Treatment

Typically treatment for head and neck cancers are surgery and/or radiotherapy, please visit 'Treatment options' for more information. After the MDT meeting further to your tests in Salisbury, your diagnosis and their recommended treatment plan will be discussed with you and fully explained. Please also feel free to ask any questions you may have. If you are comfortable to, we recommend you bring a family member, friend or carer with you to appointments as there can be a lot of information to process. Once treatment has been discussed and agreed to, you will be referred to your local treatment centre depending where you live. Treatment is given in Southampton, Poole or Bath. The team at the treatment centre will once again review your information at their own MDT meeting to finalise your treatment plan. Typically treatment will then start within a month of diagnosis.

After Treatment

After your treatment has finished, you will be put on a supported self management follow up programme, so we can monitor your progress. Please visit 'Ongoing care' for more information. If you have any concerns after your treatment ends, please contact the CNS Team at the Hospital in the first instance (visit our 'meet the team/contact details' page for their details) rather than your GP.

Determining a Diagnosis and Treatment Options

Once your test results have come back, then they will be discussed at a Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) meeting. This is when a group of specialists meet to discuss X-rays, scans, biopsy and blood results to determine your diagnosis, and together decide what the best treatment to recommend for each patient is. Please note, for onward treatment you will be referred to either to Southampton, Poole or Bath, depending where you live and your choice.

How to get to medical/surgical outpatients:

Medical/Surgical Outpatients is a standalone building opposite the Breast Unit.

By car: Enter the hospital site at Entrance A. Park in car park 8 at the rear of the hospital. Facing the hospital, cross over the road using the middle zebra crossing. Once across, turn left and immediately right down the road, heading towards the Sarum Entrance. You will soon see the Breast Unit on your left - Medical/Surgical Outpatients is opposite this.

By bus: leave the bus at the Springs Entrance (second stop). From here, head towards the middle zerba crossing. Turn right at the road immediately after this zebra crossing, (there are signposts to direct you). You will soon see the Breast Unit on the left - Medical/Surgical Outpatients is opposite this.

If you enter the hospital at the Main Entrance (level 3), follow the signs to All Outpatient Departments.

How to get to the ENT department:

The Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Department is located next to the Pembroke Suite on Level 3, near the Main Entrance opposite Marks & Spencer.

By car:

If you park in car park 2, enter via the Main Entrance and take an immediate left (opposite Marks & Spencer), you will gain entrance through the door on the right, along the back wall.
If you park in car park 8, once you enter the hospital go to Level 3 and go to the Main Entrance. The ENT Department will be on your right, opposite Marks and Spencer.听
If you have a disabled badge there is disabled parking by the Main Entrance and near the Level 2 Springs Restaurant Entrance.

By bus:听

Leave the bus at the Main Entrance bus stop, enter the hospital here.
Take an immediate left (opposite Marks & Spencer), you will gain entrance through the door on the right, along the back wall.

How to get to the Oral Maxillofacial Department:

The Oral & Maxillofacial Department is located at the far end of level 3 of the North building (the opposite end to the Sarum Entrance).

By car:听Enter the hospital site at Entrance A. Park in car park 8 at the rear of the hospital. Enter the hospital at the Springs Entrance and head to level 3, then follow signs to the 鈥�Oral & Maxillofacial Department鈥� at the end of the corridor.

If you have a disabled badge there is disabled parking by the Main Entrance and near the Level 2 Springs Restaurant Entrance.

By bus:听leave the bus at the Main Entrance. Enter the main entrance and once you reach the main corridor, turn left and follow signs to the 鈥�Oral & Maxillofacial Department鈥� which is at the end of the corridor.
