Where Will I Have my Ultrasound Scan?

There are several areas within the main hospital site, where your ultrasound scan may take place. This may depend on the area of the body that you are having scanned or if you are having a scan to monitor the growth of your baby.

These locations include:

Clinical Radiology - located on Level 3 of the main hospital building.
GP & Spinal X-ray - a separate department near Day Surgery, easily accessible from the car park by The Green, on the left at Entrance B.
Gynaecology and Breast Units - a separate department, located near the Sarum Entrance of the main hospital building, easily accessible from Car Park 8.
Maternity - a separate department, accessible from Entrance A - follow signs for 鈥楳aternity Entrance.鈥�

What is an Ultrasound Scan?

The ultrasound machine uses high-frequency sound waves (that you cannot hear) to create an image of that area. This is a widely used diagnostic test to examine the organs and soft tissues of the body. The ultrasound is carried out by Sonographers, Radiologists or Midwives, who are trained professionals in different types of ultrasound scans.

What are the Risks?

Ultrasound is a very safe procedure; unlike an x-ray or CT scan, no radiation is used, so there are no associated risks or side effects.

What Happens During an Ultrasound?

You will be asked to remove your clothes covering the area for examination and to lie on the examination couch or sit in a specific position. Here, you will have water-based gel applied to the skin. The gel allows for the probe to move freely and to produce clearer images. The sonographer/radiologist will slowly move the probe over the area, whilst viewing live images on the screen. The lights in the room will be dimmed so that the pictures on the screen can be seen more clearly and certain images will be saved to be reviewed later. Once the examination is over, the gel will be wiped off and you will be free to dress.

Will I feel any pain?

An Ultrasound scan is generally a painless procedure, however, it is important for the sonographer/radiologist to gently press down on the probe to get a good view. For some people this may be uncomfortable, please inform the sonographer/radiologist if this is the case.

How long will the ultrasound scan take?

Scans can take between 10-40 minutes but occasionally longer, should a second opinion be required. You should allow at least one hour in the ultrasound department. We try to avoid delays, however, please allow extra time in case of delays on the day of your appointment.

When will I get the results?

The results will be sent to the doctor or other medical professional who referred you, this can take between three to ten days.
